25040 was built by BR Derby by December 1956 to Lot 30208, Diagram 146. It was initially allocated to the Eastern region - which meant the letter E would've been placed in front of its number, (i.e E25040). 25040 is a "second corridor" coach, which means it has a corridor down one side with eight compartments of second class seating alongside it. As it was built for the Eastern region, it was built to have compartments of 6 seats which are separated by arm-rests (similar to the seats in the accessible area of our BSK 35255). This means it has an original capacity of 48 people. However, later SK coaches didn't contain any armrests and could fit 8 people per compartment. The interior layout of this carriage today is that of later SK coaches, 8 compartments of 8 seats. 25040 sees regular use on our trains.
