3746 is the second of our trio of TSO sisters, and was initially outshopped from Doncaster works in October 1953 as M3746. The vehicle had B1 bogies when built and was initially allocated to the Midland region as with sisters 3745 & 3749.

3746 spent almost 9 years on the Midland region before being transferred to the Eastern region in January 1962. Here it gained the number E3746. It remained on the Eastern region for over 3 years, before following its sisters to the Southern region in November 1965.

Whilst allocated to the Southern region the vehicle was given the number S3746 and was converted to air brakes and electric heating. S3746 was put into fixed set number 14 which was a 3 car set allocated primarily to the Tonbridge-Reading routes. The vehicle remained on the Southern region until its withdrawal in September 1987 alongside its sister 3745.

Purchased from BR for the Swanage Railway and stored at Andover from 1989-1991. Sold to Avon Valley Railway February 1992 and stored at Long Marston until 24th November 2020 when it was moved to Bitton. As part of the restoration, vacuum brakes and steam heating will be re-installed.
